about

About the Tampere EPs:
I've been living in Tampere for 10+ years. I'm fascinated by maps and how they relate to local history. In this series of EPs I draw inspiration from my immediate surroundings, the city and its districts.

Also, using city districts gives me lots of cool names since naming tracks is often the hardest part :).

Tampere XIV–XVIII
VENNM104

XIV: Osmonmäki
Osmonmäki consists of couple of blocks in the northern Tammela area. A curiosity in this district is the pre-1910 built residential block of Annikinkatu which had a long battle against demolition but prevailed.

XV: Tammela A
XVI: Tammela B
Tammela has a vibrant industrial history. Especially shoe factories and cobblers were prominent in Tammela and Tulli areas. Because of the vicinity of the university, the district is nowadays a popular residential area for students. Notable landmarks include the Tammela marketplace which divides Tammela into northern (A) and southern (B) parts, and the Tammela football stadium.

XVII: Tulli
Tulli gets its name from the old customs house, Tullikamari. Tullikamari and the adjacent Pakkahuone hall function nowadays as a club and concert venue with a rich cultural offering. You'll also find Tampere-talo (Tampere Hall), Scandinavia's largest congress and concert centre, here at the edge of Sorsapuisto.

Interlude: Sorsapuisto
In Sorsapuisto (Duck Park) you'll see a lot of birds in and around the pond. There used to be a zoo with wolves and lions at the site of the current Tampere Hall. Nowadays you'll have to settle for the chickens and peacocks on display here in the park during the summers.

XVIII: Kalevanharju
Most prominent landmark in Kalevanharju is the 17-hectare Kalevankangas cemetery. Most of the university's (UTA) campus is also in this district.
