about

About the Tampere EPs:
I've been living in Tampere for 10+ years. I'm fascinated by maps and how they relate to local history. In this series of EPs I draw inspiration from my immediate surroundings, the city and its districts.

Also, using city districts gives me lots of cool names since naming tracks is often the hardest part :).

X: Jussinkylä
Jussinkylä (a.k.a. Juhannuskylä) gets its name from the church in this district, Tuomiokirkko, which was previously called Johanneksen kirkko. Another beautiful art nouveau landmark here is the central fire station. Jussinkylä has a quirky nature because of the asymmetric blocks and abundance of wooden houses.

Interlude: Konsulinsaari
There's a small island in the middle of Tammerkoski called Konsulinsaari. There used to be a cafe on the island until the bridge Satakunnansilta was built over it in 1900. Nowadays it's inhabited by ducks, mostly. It's a funny little thing that deserves its own interlude.

XI: Kyttälä A
XII: Kyttälä B
Kyttälä was originally a workers' housing district east of Tammerkoski. It was crowded, fully packed, and built without a plan. Kyttälä became part of Tampere in 1877. The shacks were shortly after demolished and a proper grid plan was established. Nowadays the center of Tampere is shifting towards Kyttälä from the old "west side" mainly because of the railroad station and new developments around it.

Kyttälä is divided into northern (A) and southern (B) parts. The homebase of Venntaur is currently in northern Kyttälä.

XIII: Ratina
Ratina is mainly known for its sports stadium and the bus station. Ratinanniemi (cape of Ratina) was used as a gravel pit until the 1930s. Nowaways the southern shore is a posh residential area with tall apartment buildings.
